Extract embedded subtitles from a video

Need an editable copy of subtitles already inside a video? Save its first embedded text subtitle track as SRT. This extracts existing words; it does not transcribe speech.

Sign-in and an internet connection are required. Your video is uploaded for processing; review the credit requirement before starting.

Start by checking how the subtitles are stored. A separate text track can be extracted; words drawn into the picture and picture-based tracks cannot be turned into text here.

How It Works

Step 1Add one video
Step 2Start extraction
Step 3Download the SRT

How to save the subtitle track

1. Add one video

Choose an MKV, MP4, WebM or AVI file up to 500 MB. The video needs an embedded text subtitle track; the file extension alone does not tell you whether one is present.

2. Start extraction

Click Process Extract Subtitles. The video is uploaded for online processing. There is no track or language selector: the first subtitle track is used.

3. Download the SRT

Choose Download SRT when the subtitle result appears. The page also attempts an automatic download. Before you reuse the file, compare a few lines and their timestamps with the video.

Visible captions may not be an extractable track

Burned-in captions are part of the video image. This extractor does not read those pixels or create captions from the audio. Picture-based subtitle tracks are also unsupported, even though they are stored separately.

A video may contain several subtitle languages, but this tool only uses the first track. It does not offer a way to choose another language or combine tracks.

SRT stores text and timing rather than the original subtitle design. Do not expect fonts, colors or positioned text to match the video. Empty, damaged or unsupported tracks can fail instead of producing a usable file.

Questions about Extract Subtitles

No. This tool needs an existing embedded text subtitle track. For spoken audio without subtitles, use a subtitle-generation workflow instead.

No. The download is a separate SRT subtitle file. Keep the original video if you want to play the two together.

No. The video is uploaded for online processing. Keep the page open while it uploads. If processing moves to the background, follow the status message and check Tasks for the result.

The subtitles may be burned into the picture or stored as images rather than a text-based subtitle track. A visible subtitle is not proof that an SRT-style text track exists. Use an appropriate recognition or transcription workflow when extraction cannot provide the text.
